Columbia Campus Tutor Openings

3rd Grade
3rd grade core at Granite includes English grammar and literature, ancient history, life science and biomes, and a gentle introduction to Latin. The 3rd grade tutor will implement Granite’s curriculum for these areas of study, developing students’ skills in the trivium arts while nurturing their wonder and love of learning. The tutor will teach four 50-minute periods on Mondays and Wednesdays at Granite. The first period for this position begins at 8:50 a.m. and the last period ends at 2:10 p.m. The tutor will communicate assignments to families via weekly home assignment sheets that lay out assignments for the rest of the homeschool week. Tutors are responsible for grading all assignments.

4th History
4th grade history covers the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The tutor will be responsible for implementing Granite’s weekly lesson plans, guiding students through the material with age-appropriate classical methods including reading aloud, narration, songs and recitations, and crafts and activities. The tutor will teach for one 50-minute period on Mondays and Wednesdays at Granite during Granite’s core schedule (8:50 a.m.-2:10 p.m.). The tutor will communicate assignments to families via a weekly home assignment sheet that lays out history assignments for the rest of the homeschool week. Tutors are responsible for grading all assignments.

8th Logic
This course introduces students to formal deductive logic (fall semester) as well as provides a gentle introduction to debate (spring semester). Tutor experience with categorical syllogisms is preferred, though those comfortable with mathematical proofs often also find categorical syllogisms easy to learn and teach. Experience with debate and/or public speaking is also desirable. Granite provides many resources to logic tutors to aid in the debate process. The tutor will teach for one 50-minute period on Mondays and Wednesdays at Granite during Granite’s core schedule (8:50 a.m.-2:10 p.m.). The tutor will communicate assignments for the rest of the homeschool week via online assignment postings in Granite’s LMS. Tutors are responsible for grading all assignments.

8th Omnibus
This course traces the rooting of the Christian worldview in Western civilization following the fall of Rome. The 8th grade Omnibus tutor will be responsible for teaching Granite’s curriculum for the 8th grade Omnibus course. Tutors will guide students through an examination of Western society in the Middle Ages as it is shaped by the growth of the church, the idea of a Christian civilization, and the prevalence of the Christian faith and ethic in medieval Europe. Through medieval literature and primary sources, the chivalric code, the feudal system, and medieval theology, the tutor will prompt students to consider the nature of virtue and one’s place in God’s universe as well as what it means to live a virtuous, well-ordered life. In addition, this course focuses extensively on writing skills. The tutor must be familiar with and able to teach the 5-paragraph essay, with a particular focus on research and argumentation skills. The tutor will also guide students through a grammar curriculum that includes sentence diagramming. The tutor will teach for two 50-minute periods (usually back-to-back) on Mondays and Wednesdays at Granite during Granite’s core schedule (8:50 a.m.-2:10 p.m.). The tutor will communicate assignments to families via a weekly home assignment sheet that lays out history assignments for the rest of the homeschool week. 10th Omnibus
This course focuses on modern American history and literature from 1789 through the Cold War. Over the course of the academic year, the tutor will guide students through a study of the development of American culture, politics, values, and worldview through primary sources and secondary texts. Tutors will also read and teach several great works of American literature and help students to consider their artistic, historical, and cultural significance as well as weigh their value in terms of truth, goodness, and beauty. A third component of this course focuses on developing a strong, scholarly writing style. The tutor will teach students the long-form classical essay format, and students will write historical research and literary analysis essays throughout the year with the goal of achieving a clear and graceful style and rhetorical argument. The tutor will teach for two 50-minute periods (usually back-to-back) on Mondays and Wednesdays at Granite during Granite’s rhetoric level core schedule (8:50 a.m.-12:25 p.m.). The tutor will communicate assignments for the rest of the homeschool week via online assignment postings in Granite’s LMS. Tutors are responsible for grading all assignments.

Spanish II
This course is a review and continuation of Spanish 1. Tutors will help students learn to communicate with the people who speak Spanish and to understand their cultures. The tutor must be fluent in Spanish in order to bring students up to intermediate proficiency in oral and written communication. The tutor will teach for one 50-minute period on Mondays and Wednesdays at Granite during Granite’s academic options schedule (1:10-4:00 p.m.). The tutor will communicate assignments for the rest of the homeschool week via online assignment postings in Granite’s LMS. Tutors are responsible for grading all assignments.
