Grammar Stage (K-6th)

“How to Absorb”

The Grammar stage in classical education is the preliminary learning period in which students learn the foundational tools, skills, facts, stories, and information that will be useful to them in future studies. The purpose of this stage is to allow students to soak up as much foundational information as possible and allow them to develop basic skills as thoroughly as possible. The goal of this stage is to teach students how to effectively absorb the information they encounter.

Logic Stage (7th-9th)

“How to Think”

The Logic stage in classical education is when students begin to think critically and rationally. More than just absorbing information, students in this stage are asked to draw connections between areas of study, analyze the information they encounter, and to think logically in every subject. The focus in this stage is on teaching students how to best process the information they encounter.

Rhetoric Stage (10th-12th)

“How to Express”

The Rhetoric stage in classical education is the time in which students become fully aware of how their own worldview is being influenced by the worldviews they encounter. Beyond absorbing and analyzing information, rhetoric-level students must use that information and analysis to form and support aspects of worldview. The focus in this stage is on teaching students how to best express their own worldview.
